Assam Assembly passes UCC Bill, CM Sarma calls it ‘most secular, uniform and progressive law’
With the passage of the proposed legislation, Assam has now emerged as the third state, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill.
On behalf of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state minister Atul Bora on Monday, May 25 tabled the Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, in the Legislative Assembly.
Sarma later took to social media to mention that the move was a significant step towards initiating a formal and comprehensive discussion on the need for a Uniform Civil Code in the state.

Sarma said that the introduction of the Bill would pave the way for “an on record discussion” on why UCC is necessary for the state.
“The introduction of the Uniform Civil Code 2026 Bill in the Assam Vidhan Sabha paves the way for an on record discussion on why #UCCAssam is the need of the hour and how it will help realise the path laid down by our founding fathers,” Sarma wrote on X.

In the coming days, the proposed legislation is expected to trigger major debate in the Assam Assembly and the public sphere.
Supporters of UCC have argued that a common civil code would ensure equality before the law, besides streamlining personal laws across communities, IANS reported.
The latest move by the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in Assam comes amid renewed discussions surrounding the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code that is aimed at replacing religion-based personal laws governing key matters like marriage, divorce and inheritance among others.
As of now, the state government has not shared key details regarding the provisions of the Bill.
